Wandering north from the lake district our trusty guide book told us about Kuopio which was billed as a quanit market town. So after a few hours in the van we arrived in downtown Kuopio to see the exciting market square that the guide book talked about. Well the only way to describe it was a dated outdoor version of Milton Keynes. That said, there was a beauitful old church, a troll holding a fish and a rather fantastic old fashioned market hall. There was also half a dozen or so fantastic tour boats tied up at the harbour for the season, you see despite it being August, summer was officially over. Not a single operator working.. Quite a few confused looking tourists, paricularly those not from Scandinavia. High 20’s and all the tourism was closed… Shame.
